On our journey to the North Pole you will enjoy an approximate 1 hour train excursion while listening to the sounds of the season. Upon arriving at the North Pole we will pick up Santa; Santa will then board the train and travel with us on our way back to New Haven. Hot chocolate and cookies will be served. Children are encouraged to wear their pajamas. Make sure and bring your camera. Upon arriving back at the station you will have the opportunity to come in to the depot and take your child's photo with Santa. Don't forget your camera!

Have you ever seen an entire town inside a castle? Well, climb aboard and bring the kids (and grandkids too!) to Yew Dell this holiday season for the popular Yew Dell Gardens Express – a fabulous snow village and model train display. This magical exhibit has been created by master model builder Bob Irmscher with support from some of the most talented model train enthusiasts in the region. In addition to the trains, kids of all ages will enjoy scavenger hunts, visits from Santa on December 1 & 8 and more! Bring your cameras!

The event will begin at the picnic grove, which is directly across from the Archery Range.
What: "In the Park After Dark" Geo-Caching Event
Geo-caching is fun enough in itself, but add in the element of doing it in the dark and it's a blast! Come to E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State park to take the challenge and see how many caches you can find in the dark. All caches will be in open spaces with no trails or hidden areas. This family friendly event is fun for all ages! Please dress for the weather and bring a snack for the hunt! Hot chocolate and smores will also be offered for a minimum charge.

The Herdmans are the worst kids in the whole history of the world; they lie, steal and cheat. Now they have bullied their way into the churches’ annual Christmas pageant! Slated to be the “worst pageant ever”, the whole town has gathered in anticipation, waiting to see the Herdmans ruin Christmas. Will the pageant be a disaster as everyone is expecting, or will the spirit of the season change the hearts and minds of the Herdman family? What: Light Up Louisville
For its 32nd year, the city’s annual celebration launching the holiday season is expanding and moving to 4th Street, creating a four-block festival of lights set to music between the Galt House and Fourth Street Live.
Light Up Louisville begins the day after Thanksgiving (Friday, Nov. 23), with the arrival of Santa Claus who will help illuminate downtown Louisville, followed by fireworks – all centered at new locations – starting from 4th and Main Streets all the way to Fourth Street Live!
A new holiday activity that people will enjoy, is the addition of a ice skating rink in the heart of Fourth Street Live!. The rink will use a synthetic ice which will ensure its availability throughout the holidays even if outdoor temperatures stay above freezing.
Other Light Up Louisville activities include the Run, Run Rudolph 5K race, which starts on 4th just south of Main. Participants will receive a long sleeve T-shirt. In addition, to the annual Winter Wonderland Holiday Parade. Parade units will be decorated in festive lights and will include bands, carolers, car clubs, floats, children’s groups and civic organizations. Churchill Downs Family Fun Day!

Today the family decided to take a trip to Churchill Downs Family Fun Day. It was definitely an interesting experience!

Y'all know that we are a military family, and a LARGE one, at that. We aren't from around here. So when we have the opportunity for some family adventuring, we try and pick things we have never done, and things that are not going to completely incapacitate our budget. Churchill Downs fit the bill! We have never been to a horse race. In fact, only the 9 year old even watched the Derby on T.V. And the best part was that the admission is only $3 for adults. With the Veterans Day discount, our total cost of entry was $3 for parking and $3 for my admission. SCORE!

We were determined to get the full effects of the race track, so we made 2 bets. We nearly broke the bank with our $9 in bets! Having no idea how to pick a winning race horse, or what the numbers next to the horses names on the jumbotron mean, we picked by cute jockey outfits (costumes? uniforms?). One of them was wearing American flag type of colors, so he was our chosen jockey. We bet $5 and then another $4 for something to the effect that if he and #3 came in first and second we would also win. Apparently we also do not know how to bet on race horses. I need a horse race betting for dummies class.

After stumbling through our bet, we then had to figure out where to find the track. After some wandering, we managed to find it. We picked a little space near the curve and the finish line and watched. It was pretty cool to see the horses thundering by, but it was very anticlimactic, and we all felt a little let down when it was over. We did not win, by the way. Our pretty horse came in 4th, though!

After the race, we found the Jr. Jockey Club. They had some face painting, pumpkin painting, pumpkin bowling and funny horse hats. AND we got to talk to Charlie the horse. Jack was completely fascinated with the Horse, and would not leave until he had bro-fisted about 22 times. Lucy got her face painted and she and I walked around the rest of the afternoon with horse hats on our heads. She tried out the pumpkin bowling too. Alex and jack and Lucy painted mini pumpkins and then we spent about 20 minutes following Jack who was following the Horse and waving and bro-fisting.

We caught another race, which was a bit more exciting. The stands had started to fill up and the crowds excitement was really contagious. We all picked out a horse and cheered for ours to win.

We headed over to the Derby Museum thinking that would be a good way to fill out the rest of the afternoon, but it would cost $49 for us to enter the museum, so we decided to leave that for another day. While I can't say we will ever go back to Churchill Downs as a family outing, it was interesting. I think the big boys and I may do a small unit study on horse racing and how to bet.

On our way home we hit up ColdStone Creamery and Half Price Books. I walked away with a slow cooker book, a Raw Gourmet book and Michael Pollan's In Defense of Food. A pretty good haul!

What: Blow your own Glass Pumpkin - Last Day!
Be a glass artist for a day this fall and create your own blown-glass pumpkin at Flame Run Glass Studio and Gallery. Flame Run artists will be assisting guests with the creation of glass pumpkins on Fridays and Saturdays, October 6 - November 17 from 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and by appointment. Participants can choose up to three colors from eight color selections. Each finished pumpkin is about the size of a softball. The experience takes about 20 minutes and costs $50 per pumpkin. Freshly blown glass pumpkins need to cool for a few days before they can be safely handled and brought home. Additionally, guests can purchase previously-made Flame Run glass pumpkins available in a variety of sizes.

Experience the old world craftsmanship of handmade furniture through the 18th and 19th centuries. “Top Drawer” is a 4,000 sq. ft. exhibition that explores how a German immigrant’s custom cabinet shop became not only a Louisville tradition, but also a nationally-renowned design firm. Exquisite American, English and Continental furniture inspired by great monarchs and makers is featured, as well as the story of how the political, cultural and social forces of these periods can inspire the aesthetic of our homes. Amateur sleuths are needed to help solve a mystery while tey take a train ride back in time. These mysteries are being presented by Kentucky Railway Museum. The fictional drama are also presented by an acting company from Bardstown, Kentucky. Dinner and play begin at the Sherwood Inn (adjacent to the museum) at 5:30 p.m. Following dinner, mystery enthuiasts will board a passenger car along with actors from the play. The culprit will be revealed before the train has pulled into the station and prizes will be awarded.
