Join us monthly at Late Til 8 hours at the Speed for open figure drawing sessions! This monthly series provides visitors ages 14 and up the opportunity to draw from a live model dressed in costuming inspired by one of the artworks from the Speed’s permanent collection. Registration not required, but materials and folding stools available first-come, first-serve. Guests many bring their own materials. PLEASE NOTE: Sketching materials permitted in the galleries include: pencil, conte crayon, and colored pencils. Participants will hike around the park from the Woodland Trail to the habitat near the McAlpine dam and learn how to identify native and invasive species of trees and shrubs. The uses of various trees will also be discussed.Naturalist at Heart volunteer Randy Moser, a retired forester, will lead this volunteer training program that open to the public. Free to participate! Part 1: Blanketed Thieves: The Historical Roots of Racist Depictions of the Mexican Body in the Borderlands. Presented by Dr. Katherine Massoth. Join us for an in-depth discussion about the stereotypes associated with immigrants, focusing specifically on the Mexican body. Dr. Katherine Massoth will deliver a lecture on nineteenth-century stereotypes of Mexican bodies in order to contextualize how contemporary depictions of Mexicans as dangerous immigrants is not new. Dr. Massoth will focus on nineteenth-century representations of Mexican men and women’s bodies as “blanketed thieves and hooded whores.” She will also discuss the role of clothing as creating a form of “border” between Mexico and the United States. Dr. Massoth’s talk will be followed by a discussion led by Sarah C. Nuñez, Assistant Director of the Cultural Center at the University of Louisville and Karina Barillas, Director of La Casita Center, incorporating community members. This discussion will focus on the importance of positive representations of immigrants and how this can affect public policy.

Enter any dance studio in the United States and the classes will be brimming with girls dreaming of crossing the stage at Lincoln Center, but you will be hard pressed to find boys among them. Danseur explores the gender disparity in ballet and addresses the bias in which young women are encouraged to cross the gender barrier and participate in male-dominated fields—especially by their parents—while young men are dissuaded from participating. The film questions why it is more socially acceptable for parents (fathers in particular) to encourage their sons to participate in all other physical pursuits (such as competitive sports and fitness) but not ballet—one of the most rigorous and physically challenging activities. A recent survey revealed that nearly 96% of male ballet dancers stated that they faced physical or verbal attacks because of dance. This documentary shares the struggles of young male ballet dancers, and sheds light on bullying and homophobia while illustrating the vitality of ballet through performance, creation, preservation, and education. 2018, U.S., DCP, 70 minutes. Dedicated to 50 years of Japan-Singapore diplomatic relations, Ramen Shop is a tender story of family healing without shying away from the political histories tremoring within Singapore’s multi-ethnic fabric. Ramen Shop’s bowl of soup turns into a restorative time machine, bringing reconciliation between the living and the dead with deliciously unimagined possibilities for the future.
Masato is obsessed with soup, specifically his deceased mother’s bak kuh teh, a Singaporean pork rib “bone tea” originated by Chinese workers. By day, he works in Japan at a famed ramen shop for his emotionally distant father. By night, he works with a blogger who ships him rare spices as accomplice, he endlessly tries and fails to conjure the indelible flavor of his memories. What: The Alfred R. Shands III and Mary N. Shands Masters Series: Lecture by Artist Wolfgang Buttress
New Seeds. A talk on the relationship between art, science, and nature. Artist Wolfgang Buttress creates multi-sensory artworks that draw inspiration from our evolving relationship with the ‘natural’ world. He explores and interprets scientific discoveries, collaborating with architects, landscape architects, scientists and musicians to create human-centered experiences. Wolfgang has produced artworks on four continents including Europe, Australia, Japan and the U.S. He is well known for the UK Pavilion (Milan EXPO 2015) and The Hive, a collaboration with physicist Dr Martin Bencsik, BDP, Hoare Lea and Simmonds Studio which expresses the life of a bee hive in real time through form, sound and light. The Hive is now permanently installed at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, London, England, the project has won 27 national and international awards including gold medal for best in show at World EXPO 2015. Current projects include sculptures in Taiwan, U.S, Australia and United Kingdom.

The first documented game of baseball was played at the Kentucky School for the Blind in 1894. 125 years later, we’re showing you how it’s played now.
