  • Where: Speed Art Museum
What: Speed Cinema Presents a Free Owsley Sunday Film: Danseur
Enter any dance studio in the United States and the classes will be brimming with girls dreaming of crossing the stage at Lincoln Center, but you will be hard pressed to find boys among them. Danseur explores the gender disparity in ballet and addresses the bias in which young women are encouraged to cross the gender barrier and participate in male-dominated fields—especially by their parents—while young men are dissuaded from participating. The film questions why it is more socially acceptable for parents (fathers in particular) to encourage their sons to participate in all other physical pursuits (such as competitive sports and fitness) but not ballet—one of the most rigorous and physically challenging activities. A recent survey revealed that nearly 96% of male ballet dancers stated that they faced physical or verbal attacks because of dance. This documentary shares the struggles of young male ballet dancers, and sheds light on bullying and homophobia while illustrating the vitality of ballet through performance, creation, preservation, and education. 2018, U.S., DCP, 70 minutes. Recommended for 13+. Co-presented with the Louisville Ballet and the Louisville Film Society. A panel discussion with Robert Curran, Artistic and Executive Director, Louisville Ballet; Mark Krieger, Company Dancer, Louisville Ballet; and Ben Workman, 12-year-old ballet student, will follow the screening.

  • Where: Speed Art Museum
What: Speed Cinema Presents: The Juniper Tree
Set in medieval Iceland, The Juniper Tree follows Margit (Björk in a riveting performance) and her older sister Katla (Bryndis Petra Bragadottir) as they flee for safety after their mother is burned to death for witchcraft. Finding shelter and protection with Johan (Valdimar Orn Fygenring), and his resentful young son, Jonas (Geirlaug Sunna Pormar), the sisters help form an impromptu family unit that’s soon strained by Katla’s burgeoning sorcery. Photographed entirely on location in the stunning landscapes of Iceland in spectacular black-and-white by Randy Sellars, The Juniper Tree is a deeply atmospheric film, evocative of Carl Theodor Dreyer’s Day of Wrath and Ingmar Bergman’s The Virgin Spring, filled with indelible waking dream sequences (courtesy of legendary experimental filmmaker Pat O’Neill). A potent allegory for misogyny and its attendant tragedies, The Juniper Tree is a major rediscovery for art house audiences. 1991, U.S/Iceland, 4K DCP, 78 minutes. Recommended for 13+.

What: Speed Cinema Presents: Ramen Shop
Dedicated to 50 years of Japan-Singapore diplomatic relations, Ramen Shop is a tender story of family healing without shying away from the political histories tremoring within Singapore’s multi-ethnic fabric. Ramen Shop’s bowl of soup turns into a restorative time machine, bringing reconciliation between the living and the dead with deliciously unimagined possibilities for the future.
Masato is obsessed with soup, specifically his deceased mother’s bak kuh teh, a Singaporean pork rib “bone tea” originated by Chinese workers. By day, he works in Japan at a famed ramen shop for his emotionally distant father. By night, he works with a blogger who ships him rare spices as accomplice, he endlessly tries and fails to conjure the indelible flavor of his memories. When his father dies, a hidden suitcase with his mother’s journal and a message for her son sends Masato flying to Singapore to study bak kuh teh at the source, where he discovers a hostile grandmother, forbidden love, and family rifts simmering in the broth. 2018, Singapore/Japan/France, DCP, in Japanese, English, Mandarin, and Cantonese with English subtitles, 90 minutes. • Where: Speed Art Museum
What: Speed Cinema Presents: Babylon
Never-before released in North America, Franco Rosso’s incendiary Babylon had its world premiere at Cannes in 1980 but was banned from the New York Film Festival that same year for “being too controversial, and likely to incite racial tension” (Vivien Goldman, Time Out). Raw and smoldering, it follows a young dancehall DJ (Brinsley Forde, frontman of landmark British reggae group Aswad) in South London as he pursues his musical ambitions, battling fiercely against the racism and xenophobia of employers, neighbors, police, and the National Front.
Written by Martin Stellman (Quadrophenia) and shot by two-time Oscar® winner Chris Menges (The Killing Fields) with beautifully smoky cinematography that has been compared to Taxi Driver, Babylon is fearless and unsentimental, yet tempered by the hazy bliss of the dancehall set to a blistering reggae and lovers rock soundtrack featuring Aswad, Johnny Clarke, Dennis Bovell, and more. 1980, U.K., DCP, 95 minutes.
