Pre-school and post kindergarten Summer Camps

Did you know that Fort Knox offers summer camp for the under 5 crowd as well as the Kindergarten Club??


A Part Day Preschool Summer Camp Open House will be held at the CDC Bldg. 4249 on June 4 from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. and June 6 from 6 - 8 p.m. The Child Development Center offers week-long Part Day Summer Camps Monday through Friday from 8:30 - 11:30 a.m. and 1 - 4 p.m. for children 3 – 5 years old who have not attended Kindergarten. Each week has a theme with school readiness skills, exploration and discovery. For more information, call (502) 624-6703.


A Post Kindergarten Summer Camp Open House will be held at Kouma CDC Bldg. 1491 on June 4 from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. and June 6 from 6 - 8 p.m. Information on all of the week-long camps offered throughout the summer for children who just completed kindergarten will be available. Summer Read-A-Lots!

Everyone who knows me knows that I love to read. I read 2 or 3 books a week. My husband bought me a Nook Tablet a couple years ago, but it pooped out last month and won't hold a charge and now I am stuck re-reading all the books I already had. I plan to hit up the library and get some fresh words in the house! You should too.

Maybe I am the only summer reading program nerd here, but I loved the summer reading program at my library when I was a kid. Did you know there are summer reading programs for grown-ups?! Barr Library - Have Book - Will Travel! - This program has weekly events that look like lots of fun. I especially want to crash the Henna Tattoo event! I believe there are also prizes associated with reading.

Louisville Free Public Library - Reading is Elemental! - Awesome program for 6th - 12th graders with prizes that range from a $100 gift card down to free frosties and include lots of free passes to local attractions. Read more about this great teen program here: Reading is Elemental!

 

Adult Summer Reading Programs

Hardin county Public Library - Passport to Adventure! - I don't think there are any cool meet-ups planned for the grown-up reading program, but there is a raffle! Check out all the deets here: Passport to Adventure!

Barr Library - Have Book - Will Travel! - This is the first time that Barr Library is offering an adult summer reading program. There are no fancy gatherings with henna tattoos, but there are some cool prizes including signed bestseller books, and a Nook HD tablet!

Reading is SO Delicious!

Barr Library Summer Reading program is here! Reading is so Delicious Summer Reading Kickoff is May 31 with a Food Fight Puppet show from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Barr Library. This family program features hand puppets based on food items that interact with the audience. Weather permitting the program will be held on the front lawn of Barr so bring your own seating. Free Lunch for kids!

Do you want free lunches for your kids this summer? Kentucky offers free lunches for all children 18 and under. There are 2 options - hot lunch and sack lunch. You can get hot lunches at Pierce and Van Voorhis Elementary Schools, and sack lunches at neighborhood parks and 4 off post locations. The lunches aren't bad for the most part. The hot lunches are typical school cafeteria food and the sack lunches are mostly decent. We have participated in the lunch program for the last 4 years and it is definitely worth the trip to the park! Lunches are served only at specific times and must be eaten on site. Free Entrance to National Parks and Wildlife Preserves for Military!

Check this out! Military get FREE passes to the national parks and wildlife preserves. Just go here --> http://www.nps.gov/findapark/passes.htm and sign up for your pass! Mammoth Caves is just one place that will give you free admission with your pass!

Photos in the exhibit are accompanied by each survivor's inspirational story.

  What: "Faces of Cancer" Photo Exhibit - opening night!
  A project created by the Kentucky Cancer Program (KCP) in 2009, is a photographic tribute to cancer survivors. The "Faces of Cancer" photo exhibit is being unveiled all over Western Kentucky this year. Local photographers donated time, talent and materials for the project. Photos in the exhibit are accompanied by each survivor's inspirational story.
  Cancer prevention, screening and treatment information will be available during the exhibit's duration including KCP Survivor Tool Kits, containing information helpful to the newly diagnosed.
